As a National Trust Volunteer I’m the Longshaw Fungi Survey Recorder. We aim to make our survey the best that’s been done anywhere in the Sheffield and Peak District area. We began in December 2013, shortly after we heard the news that Network Rail had detailed plans to destroy one of Longshaw’s most undisturbed and ancient woodlands  – Rough Wood. We’ve spent most of our time looking at Rough Wood, but now we’re looking at some other places like Sheffield Plantation and the Granby Pond area. I started looking at fungi at about 15 years old when I attended huge Fungi Forays at Longshaw, led by Terry Bottomley. I use microscopy a lot, without which most fungi are impossible to name. I’ve just finished providing the Sheffield-based Sorby Natural History Society with its first comprehensive list of fungi, collected from many different sources. This took many years to do and resulted in a list of over 3,600 species from over 78,000 records. I’m a member of the British Mycological Association, and of Wild About Britain.

An amateur mycologist and enthusiastic photographer. I’ve been chasing fungi for quite a few years now; one step forward, two steps back. I thought retirement might give me a bit more time for leisure activities, but I don’t know where the time goes. I am an enthusiastic Photojournaler.
